What is Tae Kwon Do?

How does Tae Kwon Do compare with other martial arts?
Tae Kwon Do is distinct from other martial arts like Karate due to its emphasis on kicking techniques. While Karate focuses more on hand strikes, Tae Kwon Do uses hands primarily for blocking and arms for support during kicks. How long does it take to earn a black belt?
This is a question we hear a lot and is a great goal! The time it takes to earn a black belt varies depending on individual progress and dedication. Regular practice and consistent testing are required to advance through the ranks.
What equipment is needed for Tae Kwon Do?
  • A uniform 
  • A belt
  • Protective gear for sparring, such as gloves, shin guards, and a mouth guard*

*Protective gear will be necessary in intermediate and advanced classes, but not in beginner classes. We prioritize safety during instruction!
Are Tae Kwon Do classes available for adults and families?
Yes, Tae Kwon Do classes can be attended by adults and families, so if you are a parent, you can learn right alongside your youth student if you wish! Learn more here.
How often are belt tests conducted?
Belt tests are typically conducted at regular intervals, such as once per month, and a student's progress depends on their readiness. Factors such as attendance, skill mastery, and instructor evaluation determine when a student is ready to test for a new belt.
What is the purpose of bowing in Tae Kwon Do?
Bowing in Tae Kwon Do is a sign of respect towards instructors, partners, and opponents. It emphasizes the importance of humility and courtesy in the martial art.
Is Tae Kwon Do a good activity for a person with cognitive challenges?
Yes, Tae Kwon Do can be beneficial for improving focus and concentration, as well as cognitive functioning through structured physical activity and discipline.
What are the uniform requirements for Tae Kwon Do?
Students wear a white uniform with a colored belt indicating their rank. Black belts often have additional trim on their uniforms. In a trial class, comfortable workout attire is fine. If you have questions about uniforms or trial class attire, call us.
Can I wear any type of martial arts uniform?
No, the school does require a specific type of uniform, which we provide. Some variations may be allowed for events. 
What personal grooming rules apply during classes?
Students are usually required to keep their hair tied back, and jewelry, watches, and other accessories are not allowed during training to prevent injury.
How practical is Tae Kwon Do for self-defense?
Tae Kwon Do is practical for self-defense as it teaches powerful kicks, hand strikes, and grappling techniques. It improves physical strength, balance, and reaction time, which are valuable in defensive situations.
Is Tae Kwon Do safe for children and adults?

For everyone, young children through adults, Tae Kwon Do is highly beneficial, however a focus on safety is necessary. Both in practice and in sparring sessions, safety is a priority at Joon Lee's Tae Kwon Do.
